Born in São Luís do Maranhão, the singer lived her youth in Rio de Janeiro and started her professional career at the age of 20.
Since she was a little girl, thanks to her policeman father and member of the band of his corporation, João Carlos Dias Nazareth, inserted in the musical environment of Maranhão, Alcione made her first presentation already at the age of twelve.
She studied normal education and graduated as a teacher.
Despite her clear talent for music, Alcione graduated as an elementary school teacher, and taught for two years in a school in Maranhão. After being fired from the institution for teaching how to play the trumpet to students, Alcione decided to dedicate herself to music.
Since then, Alcione owns many hits in her career, winner of a
Latin Grammy Award and Best Popular Singer by the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
During the 1960s and mid-1970s, Alcione began performing in bars in the Maranhão region, until she decided to move to Rio de Janeiro in search of better opportunities for her career.
He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1967, working at TV Excelsior. After touring South American countries, he lived in Europe for two years. He returned to Brazil in 1972 and three years later won his first gold record with his first LP, A voz do samba (1975).
Identifying herself with samba, from an early age she became a fervent sympathizer of Mangueira, a school that brought together great samba dancers in the capital of Rio.
She earned the nickname Marrom, with which she is also known, and her first big hit was “Não Deixe o Samba Morrer”, by Edson and Aluísio, in the repertoire of her first LP.
In more than three decades of career, she has won nineteen gold records, two platinum and one double platinum; for two consecutive years, she won the Tim Award in the best samba singer category, between 2004 and 2005.
In addition to “Não Deixe o Samba Morrer”, numerous songs have been consecrated in Alcione’s voice, such as: Sufoco, Gostoso veneno, Rio Antigo, Nem morta, Garoto maroto, A profecia, Delírios de amor, Uma nova paixão, Depois do prazer, Enquanto houver saudade, Estranha loucura, Faz uma loucura por mim, A loba, Retalhos de satim, Qualquer dia desses, Pode esperar, O que eu faço amanhã, O surdo, Pior é que eu gosto, Meu vício e você, Pandeiro é meu nome, Você me vira a cabeça, Quem de nós, Mineira, Meu ébano, among many others.
Alcione is a resident of the Village Marapendi condominium, in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro.
Awards and honors to Alcione
Considered one of the pride of Maranhão, the singer Alcione received several honors not only in her homeland but also in various parts of Brazil. Just to mention the most important ones, see: Alcione became the name of an important theater, located in the historic center of São Luís, her hometown; In 2003 was inaugurated, also in São Luís, the Elevado Alcione Nazareth, an important viaduct that connects the neighborhoods Ipase and Vila Palmeira. In Rio de Janeiro, she was the subject of a samba-enredo in 1994 of the Unidos da Ponte samba school, with the plot Marrom da cor do samba, although the singer declares herself a lover of the Mangueira samba school.
Alcione has received several awards throughout her career, including several gold and platinum records.
A proof of this, since the beginning of the Tim Music Award she has always been elected as the best samba singer, being also part of the ABC of Music composed by: A:Alcione, B: Beth Carvalho and C:Clara Nunes.
