Fly Boat Tour: The Experience
Itinerary
The classic day trip from Barreirinhas on the Preguiças River takes a full day.
The route includes visits to the villages of Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé, all in the municipality of Barreirinhas. The region is rustic, full of small houses with buriti straw roofs.
The journey is about 40 kilometres along the Preguiças River, which has earned the name “Preguiças” due to its charming bends and the fact that it has almost no current.
The waters of the Preguiças are unique, changing direction throughout the day, with some stretches drying up at low tide, offering travellers spectacular views.
Caburé Circuit
The Caburé Circuit in the Lencois Maranhenses is done by speedboat on the Preguiças River, with stops at Vassouras, where the dunes and lagoons of the Pequenos Lencois are located.
One of the highlights of this route are the little monkeys that interact with tourists in the local huts.
The second stop is Mandacaru, where you’ll find a 35 metre high lighthouse that offers a breathtaking panoramic view. The last stop is Praia de Caburé, where a strip of sand separates the river from the sea, creating a breathtaking landscape.

Best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses
The best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses is between May and September. During this period, rainfall decreases significantly, allowing the lagoons formed by rainwater to be full and in their best condition.
Best time details:
- May to September: This period is considered the high season as the lagoons are filled with crystal clear water, creating a stunning visual. The climate is also drier and the temperatures milder, making it easier to explore the dunes and lagoons.
- July and August: These months are particularly popular with tourists as they coincide with the school holidays in Brazil. It is therefore advisable to book accommodation and tours well in advance.
Times to avoid:
- October to April: Although the lagoons can still be beautiful in early October, the rains increase from November and many lagoons can dry up by April. This can limit activities and the beauty of the landscapes.
For a complete experience and to make the most of the region’s natural beauty, plan your visit between May and September.
