What is kitesurfing?

Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is a water sport that combines elements of surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding.

The practitioner, called a kitesurfer or kiter, uses a board with or without straps and is pulled by a kite steered by a bar.

The kite is connected to the kitesurfer by aramid or dyneema lines, which are extremely strong and light materials.

How kitesurfing works

The kitesurfer stays in the water with the board and controls the kite to create traction.

By moving the control bar, the kitesurfer can steer the kite and control speed and direction. The wind inflates the kite and provides the power to move the kitesurfer across the water.

Types of kitesurfing

  • Freestyle: Focuses on manoeuvres and aerial jumps using twin-tip boards.
  • Freeride: A more relaxed style where the kitesurfer simply sails through the water using the traction of the kite.
  • Wave Riding: Similar to surfing, but using the traction of the kite to catch waves with directional boards.
  • Race: Speed racing on a set course.
  • Big Air: Focuses on high jumps and impressive aerial manoeuvres.
