Pitimbu: Paraíba’s hidden paradise of beaches, cliffs and natural pools
Pitimbu in Paraíba has a landscape rich in natural pools, estuaries and cliffs. Pitimbu is a municipality in the state of Paraíba, located in the Litoral Sul micro-region and the João Pessoa metropolitan region.
The state of Paraíba is increasingly surprising tourists with beautiful beaches, such as Pitimbu, which has become a popular summer destination.
Home to just over 19,000 inhabitants, Pitimbu transforms during the high season when it welcomes groups of tourists from the neighbouring state of Pernambuco.
Pitimbu is considered to have the longest coastline in Paraíba, with 26 kilometres of sand, 13 beaches and 4 estuaries.
However, few people know that it is one of the newest tourist destinations on the Paraíba coast, with only 138 kilometres of coastline, squeezed between Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte.
In Pitimbu, this means lunching in natural pools, riding quad bikes along secluded beaches, hiking to viewpoints over reddish cliffs and having a destination practically all to yourself.
Although still a new tourist product in Paraíba, the town was already famous among Pernambucans who landed there to escape the saturated addresses of the neighbouring coast. Pitimbu is only 30 kilometres from Goiana and 100 kilometres from Recife.
To cater for the tourists who arrive during the high season, when the local population jumps from 20,000 to 60,000 people, this rustic destination has recently undergone professional qualification in the areas of hotels, food and tourism.
The town has four estuaries that form Pitimbu’s most beautiful beaches, surrounded by corridors of cliffs that add colour to the deserted stretches of sea.

1. Praia Bela
Praia Bela is characterised by its open sea, with strong, long waves at high tide, making it ideal for water sports such as surfing and windsurfing. 2. Pitimbu Beach
The central beach in the Pitimbu community is perfect for families. Although busy, the sandy beach is wide and the sea is calm even at high tide, attracting windsurfers. There are plenty of bars to cater for visitors.

8. Historic Centre of Taquara
The village of Taquara, founded by the Dutch in colonial Brazil, was one of the most important and largest centres in the past, with three churches:
- Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
- Church of Our Lady of Penha de França
- The ruins of another church where Taquara’s public cemetery now stands
The Church of Our Lady of Penha de França, to which Pitimbu belongs, is in Taquara.
A curiosity is that the three churches form a triangle, with two of them facing each other. Aside from the churches, it is worth noting that Taquara has retained the characteristics of a village, despite the passage of time.
Church of Our Lady of Penha de França
Built in the mid-18th century, it is one of the landmarks of the occupation of the southern coast of Paraíba.
Built in the Baroque style, it has a mixed masonry construction of solid brick and limestone, using the traditional technique of canjicado.
Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
The church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1843.
