History of the community

In the 1980s, the community of Tatajuba faced a major challenge when it was buried by the dunes.

However, this didn’t deter the fishing families, who bounced back and founded a new village known as Nova Tatajuba.

Since then, the local people have lived in harmony with nature, maintaining their traditional way of life, which dates back to the 19th century.

Ecosystem and access

Due to its geographical location and difficult access, which is only possible by 4×4 vehicles, Tatajuba remains almost untouched.

The local ecosystem is made up of a variety of fixed and mobile dunes, mangroves, lagoons, cliffs, permanent lagoons and interdune lagoons, which connect to the sea at certain times of the year.

This ecological diversity not only preserves nature, but also provides a unique space for outdoor activities.

Community Tourism

Today, the traditional community of Tatajuba welcomes tourists and visitors through community tourism.

This form of tourism offers an authentic and enriching experience, allowing visitors to learn about the local culture and engage with nature in a sustainable way.

Main attractions

On this beach with its blue-green sea, decorated with shimmering coconut groves and wind-sculpted dunes, the Duna do Funil and Lagoa da Torta are the main attractions.

2. Best time to visit

The best time to visit Tatajuba is during the dry season, from July to December, when the climate is more stable and conditions for water sports are ideal.

3. How to get there

To get to Tatajuba Beach, you usually have to travel from Jericoacoara or Camocim. The journey from Jericoacoara is about 30 kilometres, some of it on sandy tracks, and 4×4 vehicles are ideal.

There are three ways to get to Tatajuba.
  • The first is from Fortaleza to Sobral on the BR-222 or the Sol Poente road and from there to Granja on the CE-362.

From there, take the paved road to the Parazinho district.

From here, you can only continue by tractor or buggy, as the road to Tatajuba is very sandy.

  • The second option is to follow the same route to Jericoacara.

After the town of Gijoca, at the fork that leads to Jeri, take the other road and follow the road to the village of Guriu and drive along the beach, if possible with a 4×4 car.

  • The third option is to go to Camocim, cross the Coreaú River by ferry and take a buggy along the beach to Tatajuba.

If you’re driving a small car, the second option is more interesting. If you’re travelling by bus, the third is best. If you’re travelling by 4×4, the first two are relevant.

4. Where to stay

The Tatajuba Community Association (Acomota) is part of the Ceará Community Tourism Network (Tucum) and organises local accommodation for visitors in local homes and inns.

Most visitors choose to stay in Jericoacoara, where there are a variety of inns, hotels and hostels. Tatajuba offers some more rustic and charming options for those seeking a quieter and more immersive experience.
