1. History and Historic Centre of Arraial d’Ajuda
Arraial d’Ajuda, located in the municipality of Porto Seguro, Bahia, has a history dating back to the colonial period. In 1549, the Jesuits founded the first hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Help, the first Marian shrine in Brazil. The present church dates from 1772.
The Historic Centre of Arraial d’Ajuda is listed by IPHAN and is a lively part of the town. The Church Square is surrounded by colourful colonial houses and is home to craft shops, cafes and restaurants.
The Staircase of the Saint is a historical structure that connects the Church Square with the Holy Fountain in Arraial d’Ajuda, Bahia. Revitalised in January 2021 by the Arraial do Bem movement, the staircase was decorated with colourful mosaics by the artist Gabriel Guyrá, depicting the region’s rich religious and cultural history.
The Mirante das Fitas offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the region, and is also a place of tradition where visitors tie colourful ribbons and make wishes.
Arraial d’Ajuda also has historical importance during the Second World War, with the creation of an airfield in 1939, used for military operations until the 1960s.
Today, the town combines its rich history with its natural beauty, and is a tourist destination that preserves its cultural and religious traditions.
