Brazil has a large number of nudist and naturist beaches, places where the practice of social nudity is allowed and accepted.
In this article, we’ll look at the eight beaches where this practice is regulated and clarify the differences between related terms.
Definitions of related terms
1. Naturism
Naturism is a philosophy of life that promotes harmony with nature, expressed through nudity, healthy eating, treatment of illnesses and a sustainable lifestyle.
2. Nudism
Nudism is a practice that falls under the concept of naturism. It consists of being in a social environment without clothing, promoting total nudity, but without sexual or moral connotations.
3. Naturalism
Naturalism differs significantly from the other terms in that it is a doctrine that regards nature as the only superior being and denies the existence of the transcendent and the supernatural.
It’s important to note that none of these practices are related to fetishes, voyeurism or swinging, but rather to a way of life that seeks respect for oneself, one’s neighbour and the environment, as defined by the International Naturist Federation.

2. Abricó Beach – Rio de Janeiro
Praia do Abricó, located in the west of Rio, is the only official naturist beach in the city. Regulated by the Abricó Naturist Association (ANA), the beach is a protected area surrounded by lush vegetation.
Access is from Avenida Estado da Guanabara, and the naturist section is on the left-hand side of the beach.
3. Olho de Boi Beach – Rio de Janeiro
Located in the Búzios region, Olho de Boi Beach offers 50 metres dedicated to nudism, accessible after a 30-minute walk.
Known for its crystal clear waters and rich marine life, this is an isolated refuge with no infrastructure, so visitors must bring their own supplies.
4. Tambaba Beach – Paraíba
Tambaba was the first nudist beach in the Northeast, officially declared in 1991. With cliffs and natural pools, the beach is divided into two sections: one for naturists and another where clothing is allowed.
It’s important to note that only women can enter the nudist section unaccompanied.
5. Galheta Beach – Santa Catarina
Located 15 kilometres from Florianópolis, Praia da Galheta is a semi-natural beach where nudism is optional.
Although it has no infrastructure, it is a popular spot for naturists and locals alike. Accessible via a 300 metre long path, the beach offers a private and peaceful environment.
6. Pedras Altas Beach – Palhoça, SC
Praia de Pedras Altas, 30 kilometres from Florianópolis, is a small paradisiacal beach surrounded by lush vegetation.
Supervised by the local naturist club, access is restricted to those wishing to practise nudism, with the beach divided between families and singles.
7. Barra Seca Beach – Espírito Santo
With a length of 10 kilometres, Barra Seca Beach is only accessible by boat and is a secluded and quiet beach.
The naturist area is divided between couples and singles, with basic camping facilities. Access is via the Ipiranga River and the beach has kiosks and toilets.
8. Pinho Beach – Santa Catarina
Recognised in 1986, Praia do Pinho was the first official nudist beach in Brazil.
The beach has good infrastructure, including car parks and guesthouses, and has a 50-metre-long area dedicated to nudism, divided into sections for beginners and experienced practitioners. You need a nudist passport to go there.
