This finely engraved view depicts Fort Ceulen (also known as Fort of the Tres Reis Magos) along the Potengi River in today's Natal.

In the foreground, Dutch soldiers oversee natives unloading goods from a small canoe. The ribbon-banner cartouche features a coat of arms with an ostrich emblem.

This engraving was published in Caspar Barlaeus' Rerum per Octennium in Brasilia, which followed Count Johan Maurits van Nassau's journey in Brazil between 1636-1644.
