You can also dive into the Poço Azul (Blue Well) and enjoy the fantastic experience of swimming in the illuminated well.
Those who know how to swim try to avoid the lifejacket, but you only have to dip your face in the Blue Well to understand why they are so careful.

The cave is approximately 70 metres high, 40 metres of which are submerged, and the ‘bathing’ area is 35 metres long and 20 metres wide.
Poço Azul was discovered in 1920 by prospectors, one of the first inhabitants of the region. However, the site only became a tourist attraction in 1994.
Seeing the rock formations with extreme clarity, despite their depth (they vary from 3.5 metres to 16 metres), causes a kind of vertigo. The impression is not of being on the surface, but down at the bottom of the well, such is the transparency of the water.

What to do at the Blue Well
- Floating: Equipped with waistcoats and snorkels, you can swim and float in the crystal-clear waters while admiring the submerged rock formations.
- Photography: During the period between February and October, the sun creates a beam of light that illuminates the waters, providing a unique visual spectacle.
- Cultural Exploration: The Poço Azul also has archaeological importance, as fossils of prehistoric animals have been found there.
It is estimated that this area corresponds to only a third of all that there is to be explored in the cave.
Floating can only be done in the front part of the well, which is delimited by ropes. Although the sensitive albino catfish also inhabit the Blue Well, bathing is permitted.
Guided tours
- Many local tourist agencies offer packages that include the Blue Well and other attractions, such as the Enchanted Well. It’s a convenient way for those who don’t have their own vehicle.
Important Tips
- Best time: Go to the Poço Azul between 12pm and 2pm, when the sunlight penetrates directly into the water, enhancing its crystalline colour.
- Restrictions: It is not permitted to use sunscreen or repellent before entering the water, in order to preserve the ecosystem.
- Tickets: There is an entrance fee that includes the floatation equipment.
