
Goiana in Pernambuco was founded in the 16th century and has eight churches listed by Iphan and the Museum of Sacred Art maintains a secular collection.
Administrative center of one of the first and most prosperous hereditary captaincies explored by the Portuguese at the beginning of the colonial period (1500-1822), the Metropolitan Region of Recife It still holds historical treasures that go beyond the geographical limits of the Capital and neighboring Olinda, a World Heritage Site since 1982.

The Pernambuco city of Goiana is one of the oldest settlements in Brazil, having been the seat of the hereditary captaincy of Itamaracá, elevated to the category of 'parish' in 1568, and later becoming the hub of several sugar mills. sugar.
During the Dutch invasion, the region of Goiana was the scene of several clashes, one of the most memorable occurred in 1646, when women defended the village of Tejucopapo from a surprise attack by the Dutch, and repelled them without the help of Portuguese troops. The fact was marked in the history of Brazil (undisclosed, unfortunately), and the women became known as “Heroínas do Tejucopapo“.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF AMPARO DOS MEN BROWN
It was built in 1681 and restored in 1870.
On the main altar, the image of Nossa Senhora do Amparo was a gift from Princess Isabel. There is also the Tombstone of Jerome de Albuquerque's tomb, a hero from Pernambuco and his wife.
Listed by IPHAN as a National Historic Landmark in 1938.
For many years, the building functioned as a temporary museum that displayed pieces of sacred art dating from the 17th century, which recently migrated to the Social Service of Commerce (SESC) building.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF CARMO AND CONVENT OF SANTO ALBERTO DE SICILY
Built in 1672, the church has a Baroque mannerist style. It has images in hardwood from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. A feature of the convent that deserves to be highlighted is the entrance hall, richly carved and with paintings.
The ensemble also features elements of Arab architecture through symmetrical and light lines, seen mainly in the towers.
On the left side of the main altar there is a small chapel dedicated to Bom Jesus dos Passos with the image of Nossa Senhora das Lágrimas.
It belongs to the Order of Carmelites and has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF CONCEIÇÃO
Composed of the Baroque style, the church was built in 1807.
On the main altar, in the upper niche there is an image of Christ and on the lower niche the image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in wood carvings.
The main altar is all in white and blue wood. It has two side altars.
It has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF WONDERFUL
Probably built in the second half of the XNUMXth century, with three facades and three doors to access its interior.
It is a curiosity that has attracted the attention of visitors who come to know a little about the history of the heyday of Goiana, at the time of Colonial Brazil, and find a typically Germanic church, in the most authentic half-timbered style, a very common type of construction in rural areas from Germany, used as protection to prevent the accumulation of snow on the roof.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MERCY
Its cornerstone dates from September 22, 1722. Its construction, however, was only completed in 1726.
It has five images, four balconies, two altars and a wooden choir.
On the main altar is the image of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres and in the sacristy there is a washbasin in Portuguese ashlar stone.
Years later, construction began on the Hospital da Santa Casa, attached to the Church and the first hospital in Goiana (1759-1931).
In the chancel are buried, without a tombstone, the hands of Father Pedro de Souza Tenório, martyr of the Pernambuco Revolution of 1817.
The church architecture has a simple late Baroque composition. It was listed in 1938 by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark.

MATRIX CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF WHITE MEN
Built in the XNUMXth century, in Baroque style. Originally designed with two bell towers, the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Brancos did not have enough resources to complete the second tower.
Only that of the Gospel was completed, similarly to the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos.
The decoration consists of altars with images of Brazilian master craftsmen from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, highlighting the images of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Joaquim, São José, Senhor Morto and São Miguel.
In addition to the rich images, there are two paintings in the temple: the first, on the altar of the Blessed Sacrament, reproduces the scene of the Last Supper; and the second, representing the crucifixion of the Savior, in a niche in the chancel's altar.
It has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF THE BLACK MEN
In place of a small chapel that existed there in the XNUMXth century, the current church was built at the end of the XNUMXth century, in authentic Baroque style.
An inscription dated 1836 on the facade of the church indicates some commemorative event held in that year.
In the past, many religious and folkloric demonstrations were held in front of the church.
It has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHURCH AND CONVENT OF OUR LADY OF SOLEDADE
The convent style is a transition from Baroque to Mannerist.
Inside there are three side altars with niches and saints.
On the main altar, the image of Our Lady of Soledade.
It has as a rarity a wheel to collect alms, which served at the time to receive orphans and foundlings.
It also has three wooden images, all Brazilian from the XNUMXth century. Attached to the church, there is the São José shelter for the elderly.
The complex has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHURCH OF OUR LADY TEREZA D'ÁVILA OF THE THIRD ORDER OF CARMO
In Baroque style, the Church of Santa Tereza D'Ávila was built in 1753 by the brothers of the Third Order of Carmo.
It integrates the Carmelite group within the historical nucleus of Goiana.
On the upper part of the façade there is a coat of arms of the Carmelite Order. It has no bell tower.
Its interior has a single nave, with four side altars and six niches with images of saints. The church has been listed by Iphan as a National Historic Landmark since 1938.

CHAPEL OF SANTO ANTÔNIO
Its construction began at the end of the 1654th century, it has already undergone several internal and external transformations, currently exhibiting aspects of the XNUMX renovation, in Gothic style, an architectural movement born in France in the XNUMXth century, under strong Muslim influence.
In the chapel, in 1680, the body of the field-master André Vidal de Negreiros, leader and inspirer of the movement of the Pernambuco Insurrection (1645-1654), against the Dutch colonization in Brazil, was buried.
His remains were later transferred to the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, in Monte dos Guararapes, where they remain today.
