South Coast

The south coast of Pernambuco is made up of beautiful beaches some well known as the beaches of Porto de Galinhas, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Tamandaré known for their great beauty throughout Brazil and others little known but with incomparable beauties.

The most famous beach on the south coast, Porto de Galinhas helps to double the population of Ipojuca every summer.

The main beaches of the South Coast are those of the municipalities of:

Recife (beaches of: Boa Viagem and Pina), Jaboatão dos Guararapes (beaches of: Barra de Jangada, Candeias, Piedade), Cabo de Santo Agostinho (beaches of: Calhetas, Enseada dos Corais, Gaibu, Itapuama, Paiva, Paraíso, Suape and Xaréu), Ipojuca (beaches of: Camboa, Cupe, Muro Alto, Pontal de Maracaípe, Porto de Galinhas and Serrambi), São José da Coroa Grande (beaches of: São José da Coroa Grande Barra da Cruz, Gravatá and Várzea do Una), Sirinhaém (beaches of: Barra de Sirinhaém, Guadalupe and Gamela), Tamandaré (beaches of: Tamandaré, Mamocambinhas and dos Carneiros).

The beaches of Piedade and Candeias are densely populated, surrounded by tall luxury buildings. From Itapuama onwards, the pattern of the beaches becomes one of long strips of sparsely inhabited sand, where fishing and handicrafts are practised by the locals, and where the various hotels and resorts are located.

The economy of the non-urban south coast is based on tourism and handicrafts. In Porto de Galinhas, there are several restaurants, bars, handicraft and diving shops, leisure and entertainment equipment, concert halls, as well as dozens of hotels and inns.
