Cumbuco beach in Ceará, 35 km from Fortaleza, is internationally recognised as one of the best spots in the world for kitesurfing.

The water is always at a pleasant temperature, the winds are constant, the sea is calm and the absence of animals and rocks makes the place a paradise for kitesurfers.

The Vila do Cumbuco is another differential for those who have the beach as a destination. The charm of the fishing village makes the visit even more inviting.

Full of options for inns and restaurants, it is surrounded by dunes and is close to other attractions, such as the Lagoa do Banana, and beaches as well known as Barra do Cauípe and Icaraí.

For those who do not know, kitesurfing is a water sport practised with a kite and a board.

The athlete stands on the board, with the kite attached to his waist and, driven by the wind, glides through the water. It is a relatively recent sport, but it has grown a lot in recent years and has gained many followers in Brazil and around the world.

Guests at Carmel Cumbuco (www.carmelhoteis.com.br), in Ceará, have this idyllic setting at their fingertips, as the resort is located on Cumbuco beach.

And to make the most of the beach’s sporting potential, Carmel Cumbuco offers kitesurfing lessons on a regular basis.

Alexandre Barth has been kitesurfing for over 14 years and was one of the first to start teaching the sport in Brazil.

Today he is the exclusive consultant of Carmel Cumbuco and teaches kitesurfing to the resort’s guests.

Alexandre does not stop at guiding on the techniques needed to balance on the board, but also transmits his passion and enthusiasm for the sport.

There are several packages offered by Carmel Cumbuco for those who want to practice kitesurfing, from beginners to experts.

Those looking for their first contact with kitesurfing can opt for one-off lessons to learn a little about the technique of the sport and feel the delicious sensation of flying over the waters, in the company of the instructor.

Those who want more intensive training can sign up for the 4-day package, which includes an average of nine hours of lessons, and goes through the main elements of kitesurfing.

For beginners, a first instruction on the sand is essential, with guidance on the winds, currents and how to handle the equipment. In the water, students learn to control the kite, maintain the correct angle of the board and balance.

At the end of the four days, Alexandre guarantees that – despite very likely falls – beginners will have the autonomy to practice the sport and experienced ones will have improved their techniques with the powerful winds of Ceará.
