What is kitesurfing

Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is a water sport that combines elements of surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and paragliding.

The practitioner, called a kitesurfer or kiter, uses a board with or without straps and is pulled by a kite controlled by a bar. The kite is connected to the kitesurfer by aramid or dyneema lines, which are extremely strong and light materials.

How Kitesurfing Works

The kitesurfer stands in the water with the board while controlling the kite to generate traction. By moving the control bar, the kitesurfer can steer the kite and control the speed and direction. The wind inflates the kite and creates the force needed to move the kitesurfer over the water.

Types of Kitesurfing

  1. Freestyle: Focused on aerial manoeuvres and jumps, using twin-tip boards.
  2. Freeride: A more relaxed style, where the kitesurfer simply sails through the water, taking advantage of the kite’s traction.
  3. Wave Riding: Similar to surfing, but using the traction of the kite to catch waves with directional boards.
  4. Race: Speed races over predetermined courses.
  5. Big Air: Focused on high jumps and impressive aerial manoeuvres.
