The Museu do Homem do Nordeste, located in Recife, Pernambuco, is an important cultural and historical centre that offers a rich insight into the culture, history and society of the Northeast of Brazil. The collections of the Museu do Homem do Nordeste are exhibited in three sectors:

  1. The first deals with the cultural, historical and technological aspects of sugarcane culture, of fundamental importance in the formation of the Northeastern people.
  2. The second exhibits elements of the regional construction process, trying to reproduce the “dwelling” of the Northeast.
  3. The third represents man in sets of objects referring to his ethnicity and cultural background.

The collection of the Museu do Homem do Nordeste, representative of the historical, ethnic and social formation of the current Northeast Region, has around 15,000 pieces, cultural legacies of the Indian, the European and the African in the formation of the Brazilian northeasterner.

From 18th and 19th century building materials to mocambos; from ex-votos to Afro-black cult objects; from rag dolls and popular toys to the regional ceramics of Vitalino, Nhô Caboclo, Zé Rodrigues, Porfírio Faustino and other notable and anonymous artists of the people.

From sugar labour technologies to life in the big houses and slave quarters. All this makes up the collection of one of the most important historical-anthropological museums in Brazil.

The Museu do Homem do Nordeste is a benchmark in contemporary museology for its educational and cultural activities, increasingly consolidating its integration with society, especially with schools, universities, governmental and non-governmental institutions, cultural agents and others.
