Historical Center and Matrix Church
Another mandatory stop for visitors is the Historical Center of Arraial d’Ajuda, where the beautiful Mother Church of Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda stands out. Built between 1549 and 1551, it was listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute.
Beaches of Arraial d’Ajuda
1. Praia do Apaga Fogo
Separated from the city by the Buranhém River, it has fine white sand. Reefs make the waters calm and, at low tide, form natural pools good for swimming and kayaking. The water is dark but clean.
It already belongs to Arraial da Ajuda – it is where the ferry from Porto Seguro disembarks. It has a comfortable hotel, several inns. restaurants and camping.
2. Praia de Araçaípe
Straight, it has weak waves, fine white sand (with stones and shells) and reefs. It has inns and bars.
3. Praia da Ajuda (ou dos Coqueiros)
It is the village beach. Fine loose sand, with whelks, small stones and coral formations in some stretches. Gentle waves and coconut trees. It has inns, bars and camping.
4. Praia do Mucugê
The busiest. It is straight, with fine white sand and natural pools formed by reefs. It is 800 m from the center of Arraial. It has inns, restaurants, bars and camping.
5. Praia do Parracho
A super tent has given its name to this stretch of beach, which has become a meeting place for young people. Windsurfing and kayaking equipment for rent.
6. Praia de Pitinga
Cove with strong, greenish waves that break on the reefs near the shore.
The sand is soft and clear. A few well-structured bars line the beach with chairs. Towards the south the beaches become increasingly deserted and there is occasional nudism.
7. Praia da Lagoa Azul
It has soft, clear sand and crashing waves.
The Blue Lagoon is a well wedged between cliffs and sought after for its clay, which is said to be medicinal and good for the skin, Access on foot, by the beaches of Pitinga or Taípe. There is a bar next to the lagoon.
8. Praia de Taípe
Quiet, with white and golden sands, transparent and warm waters.
It is isolated by cliffs of up to 20 meters. Access before the bridge over the Taípe River.
How to get to Arraial d’Ajuda
Arraial d`Ajuda is part of the municipality of Porto Seguro; therefore, the difference between getting to the headquarters of Porto Seguro and Arraial is very small: just a ferry crossing.
It doesn’t matter which way you choose to get there. Be it car, plane or bus… you will always have to cross the Bunharém River.
People who are on foot pay for the journey and this amount is only paid in one direction (from Porto Seguro to Arraial d’Ajuda); in the opposite direction there is no charge for pedestrians.
1. Airplane
The nearest airport to Arraial d’Ajuda is Porto Seguro Airport, a few kilometers from the city center. After arriving at the airport you will need to cross the river on a ferry.
2. Bus
Those who want to get to Arraial d’Ajuda by bus can count on the Porto Seguro bus station, which receives buses from companies such as São Geraldo/Gontijo, Águia Branca and Itapemirim.
3. Car
Both those coming from the south and those coming from the north should take the BR-101 to Eunápolis, and then the BR-376.
By car, there are charges each way for crossing the river that separates Arraial from Porto Seguro. Those who live in the region can present proof of residence and the price drops by half.
The ferry operates every day, 24 hours. At dawn, the interval between departures is one hour; during the day, 30 minutes.
It is a safe crossing and takes only ten minutes, but it is a simple and uncomfortable way. The distance from the airport and bus station to the ferry is no more than 5km.
