Ibicoara located in the Chapada Diamantina, the city of Ibicoara, which means “hole in the earth”, attracts tourists for its gastronomy, culture and beautiful waterfalls.

The municipality emerged in the 19th century with the arrival of prospectors in the chapada in search of gold. Initially known as “São Bento village”, the city served as a resting point for those who left Mucugê and Andaraí.

History of Ibicoara

Ibicoara emerged in the early nineteenth century with the arrival of some prospectors looking for gold. The village of São Bento, as it was initially known, became a resting point for tropeiros and prospectors traveling to Mucugê or Andaraí. There, coffee culture (still strongly present today) and cattle breeding emerged.

The village was renamed Igarassu and, in the 1940s, became a district with the name of Ibicoara, being emancipated from Mucugê in 1962.

The festivities inherited from the ancestors (Festa de S. Bento and Reisado), the June festival and the carnival stand out.

Some of the town’s typical dishes include godó or banana cutlets, beiju and couscous. Currently, the coffee and potato crops stand out.

After all, the main attraction of the city is the Cachoeira do Buracão. Located 30 km from the city center, the waterfall has a fall of 85 meters high and an indescribable beauty.

3. Municipal Natural Park of Espalhado

The Park is 30 km from the municipality’s headquarters and stands out among the natural attractions, with several jumps, canyons and waterfalls. Its main attraction is the Buracão Waterfall, 85 m high, considered one of the most beautiful in the entire Chapada Diamantina.

The trail runs along the Rio Espalhado, the waterfalls of Recanto das Orquídeas, Recanto Verde, the crossing of the canyon to the Buracão well.
