Jandaíra is a municipality in the far north of Bahia situated on the border with the state of Sergipe, which is separated from this state by the Rio Real.

Jandaíra has a beautiful coastline, with coconut trees, dunes and beaches with warm waters.

The Rio Real, which bathes the municipality on the border with Sergipe, is a good option for water sports.

There is also the historic town of Abadia, the Itanhi Waterfall and the Garunga Fountain in a cave surrounded by Atlantic forest.

The main attraction of the municipality is Mangue Seco.

The dunes reach 35 meters high and there are tour operators offering buggy rides.

The beauty of the place was well portrayed in the soap opera “Tieta”, broadcast by the Globo network and inspired by the novel “Tieta do Agreste”, by Jorge Amado.

This production further encouraged tourism in the place, when Brazil came to know all the beauty of the place, which holds numerous dunes and primitive landscapes of rivers and sea.

The leisure options are varied, with programs that satisfy from surfers, who on the beaches of the region find peaks of great waves, to fishermen, who in the calm waters of the rivers can hook the most varied fish.

Among them are stingrays, dogfish and carapebas, as well as the manatee, a rare species, usually found in the Amazon River, which in the calm waters of the Rio Fundo, another of the several rivers that cut through Mangue Seco, found a favorable habitat to reproduce.

The Rio Real is also worth mentioning.

Its waters, a little salty, resemble the waters of the sea and are a real surprise for the unsuspecting. The salinity amuses bathers with the ease of simply floating and relaxing at the taste of the river.

The village lies between the mouth of the Rio Real – which day by day is digging its banks – and the immense dunes that move with the wind and advance wanting to cover everything.

The difficulty of access – exclusively by boat, through the Rio Real – is what makes Mangue Seco more attractive and keeps it naturally rustic.

The few streets are covered with fine, soft sand. At night, children still play hide and seek, while visitors listen to old stories told by fishermen or participate in serenades with the native population.

Dimly lit, the village offers a starry night, with extraordinary beauty during periods of full moon.

The landscape, which is always stunning, gains an extra attraction when the reflection of the moon intensifies in the waters of the rivers that surround the region. In a privileged position, in the bay of Estância, Mangue Seco witnesses the meeting of the rivers Real, Piauí, Fundo, Guararema, Priapu and Saguí with the Atlantic Ocean.

The mixture of fresh and salt water provides the formation of extensive areas of mangrove and, consequently, the abundance of seafood.

On the river beach, the coconut trees lean over, curving their trunks over the water. All along the shore, inns, bars, restaurants and fishermen’s houses are scattered, creating a good support structure for tourists.

The Municipality of Jandaíra is the second producer of coco-da-baía in Bahia and has a significant production of passion fruit.

The lands of the current municipality belonged to the sesmaria donated in 1573 to the Governor-General, D. Luís de Brito e Almeida.

In the seventeenth century the Chapel of Our Lady of Abadia was built and around it a village arose that was elevated to District in 1718 and to Municipality in 1728, called Vila de Abadia.

In 1880, the headquarters was transferred to the village of Cachoeira, receiving the name of Cachoeira da Abadia.

In 1927 the municipality was renamed Jandaíra. In 1931, it was extinguished and annexed to Rio Real. Restored in 1933.

Again extinct in 1943, and finally reestablished in 1944 and its headquarters, elevated to the City.

Beaches in Jandaíra

1. Mangue Seco Beach

The beach of Mangue Seco in Jandaíra became famous because of the recording there, in 1989, of some chapters of the soap opera Tieta, based on the novel ‘Tieta do Agreste”, by Jorge Amado.

But the place deserves its fame: there are more than 30 km of beautiful beaches, largely deserted, with many places for wild camping.

There are dunes of very white sand, coconut palms, sandbanks and mangroves. The dunes, in constant movement due to the wind, swallow up coconut trees and threaten houses, churches and squares in the local village: at the same time they serve for “sand skiing”, practiced by the natives with coconut splints.

The beach of Mangue Seco in Jandaíra is 1.5 km from the village of Jandaíra (during the season there are tractors with a small cart that make the journey, but you can also go on foot).

It is straight, with loose white sand and strong waves.

On the shore there are some stalls selling fried fish. Near the village – which lies between the Rio Real estuary and the Atlantic Ocean – there is a shipwreck.

The best way to get there is still via the state of Sergipe.

Coming from the south, passing by the Linha Verde (the new and beautiful Bahian road that goes from Praia do Forte to Itanhi, on the border with Sergipe), you go to Indiaroba.

Then turn right to Pontal (12 km of reasonable dirt road). Cars are parked in Pontal and a boat is taken across the Rio Real to Mangue Seco (20′ to 40’ crossing). Buses arrive in Pontal from Estância (SE).

2. Praia do Coqueiro and Praia Costa Azul

Praia do Coqueiro and Praia Costa Azul in Jandaíra are covered with fine white sand, framed by coconut trees and small dunes. Its clear blue waters are the natural habitat of various fish such as sea bass, dogfish, rays. Access from the beach, by buggy.
