Mangue Seco is wedged between the mouth of the Rio Real and the immense dunes.

The difficulty of access by boat, via the Rio Real – is what makes Mangue Seco more attractive and keeps it naturally rustic. The few streets are covered with fine, soft sand.

Mangue Seco is located in the municipality of Jandaira, in the far north of the Bahian coast, on the border with Sergipe.

Although rustic, the village enchants all visitors.

When crossing the Rio Real, you can already see the coconut trees and the boats in the harbor: an unparalleled landscape. Of course, when you disembark, the “bugreiros” will offer you a walk in the dunes.

See the Costa dos Coqueiros map.

Resist the harassment; settle in your pousada and go to know the village, which is small, with dirt streets, donkeys in the sun, a little church from the 19th century dedicated to Bom Jesus dos Navegantes and a commercial space, the “Shopping Mangue Seco”, where there are handicrafts from the region.

After that, hire a tour to recognize the territory and ask to be taken to the viewpoint, from where you have a panoramic view of Mangue Seco and, in the late afternoon, a magnificent sunset.

The beaches of Mangue Seco are 2 km from the village; a walk of half an hour or less, cutting through the dunes. To reach the more distant beaches the best transportation is the buggy.

Boat trips along the Rio Real to the village of Apraius. 10 km from the village, which pass through the mangrove forest are ideal for bird watching.

Dunes, sea, rivers, mangroves, coconut groves and stories about the filming of Tíeta will accompany your stay.

The nights of the full moon are special; the manguenses maintain the tradition of serenades that tell cases of hauntings.

Until recently, accommodation in this part of the world was very precarious, with makeshift inns in fishermen’s houses, but now there is electricity, cell phone antenna and some hotels. When hiring accommodation, ask about accepting checks or credit cards, but also bring cash, as there are no banks in the village.

Don’t leave Mangue Seco without trying the moqueca de aratu (mangrove crab) and stopping by Recanto da Dona Sula.

In the house that served as the setting for the global soap opera Tieta, D. Ana Flora, daughter of D. Sula, according to her mother’s tradition, makes sweets, ice cream and liqueurs. The property belonged to a cousin of Jorge Amado, who hosted him there in 1935.

When the writer was being persecuted by the Estado Novo. The village inspired his novel TietadoAgreste, published in 1977.
