It is the first beach of the “Costa do Cacau”, on the coast of Bahia, south of Salvador.

Situated between the sea and the Atlantic Forest, Itacaré is the ideal option for those who like the beach combined with a busy nightlife, as there are always shows and parties, as well as bars and nightclubs that operate all year round.

The beaches of Itacaré attract many surfers, due to the strong waves, considered the best in Bahia, and the warm waters all year round, including in winter.

Itacaré is also a great destination for ecotourists and extreme sports enthusiasts. There is an Environmental Preservation Area, where you can go rafting, mountain biking, tree climbing, hiking and abseiling – or simply enjoy the exuberance of the Atlantic Forest with its rivers and waterfalls.

There are 14 main beaches in Itacaré, each with very particular characteristics. Those close to the city have good tourist infrastructure, with restaurants and inns. The more distant ones are almost deserted, being accessible only by trails.

A former refuge of the cocoa colonels, the village of Itacaré preserves the architecture of the past. Many mansions have been remodelled and now house restaurants, bars, cafés, nightclubs and shops.

Sunset in ItacaréThe cosy village seems to be in a permanent party mood. The bars in the Centre and Pituba are the meeting points in Itacaré. Parties take place on the sands until daylight, especially to the rhythm of forró and reggae.

The sunset in Itacaré is a spectacle in itself. The best place to enjoy it is Ponta do Xaréu, on the left corner of Praia da Concha, where the colourful fishermen’s boats mix with the image of the sun.

Diving into the sea. After sunset, another attraction of the place are the capoeira circles led by the natives.

Itacaré has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging between 25ºC and 30ºC, but during the summer (from December to February) can reach 40ºC. The sun shines all year round and the rains are more frequent in winter (from May to August).

BEACHES OF ITACARÉ

1. CONCHA BEACH

It is the beach of Itacaré with the largest tourist infrastructure, full of tents and inns. Located near the city centre, it is the busiest during the summer. It has calm waters, without waves, and many coconut trees.

2. COSTA BEACH

Small, with many coconut trees, white sand and loose. Located 1km from the village of Itacaré, it is not very frequented, as it does not have infrastructure and is not suitable for swimming due to the strong current. Ideal just to contemplate the beautiful view.

3. COROINHA BEACH

Porto de pesaca and urban beach, located in the centre of Itacaré, with dark sand and waters not recommended for swimming. At night it is very busy, with numerous bars, capoeira performances and live music.

4. RIBEIRA BEACH

The last beach in Itacaré accessible by car along the Caminho das Praias, it has several beach huts and car parking. Very busy on holidays and weekends, the beach is surrounded by the Atlantic Forest. A small river flows down from the mountains, forming waterfalls and creating a freshwater pool.

5. RESENDE BEACH

Located 1km from the centre of Itacaré, it is a small cove with natural pools, good waves for surfing, huge coconut trees and white sands. Accessible by a small trail that leaves the main street, it is a visual protection area, with no construction allowed, and one of the quietest beaches in Itacaré.

6. TIRIRICA BEACH

Favourite beach of surfers in Itacaré, it has movement throughout the year. It is a small cove of fine white sand, coconut trees, greenish waters and strong waves, protected by stone walls. It has infrastructure, with tents and inns, being 30 minutes from the centre of Itacaré.

7. PRAINHA

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil, it is located between two hills covered by the forest and has a vast coconut grove next to the sand. Very popular with surfers, as it offers good waves. It has no tourist infrastructure and access is via a 40-minute walk through the middle of the Atlantic forest, passing by waterfalls and streams. Thus, it is recommended to make the journey accompanied by a local guide.

8. ENGENHOCA

Frequented by surfers, it is a practically deserted beach, with a landscape formed by Atlantic forest, coconut trees and a stream in the southern part. To get to the beach you have to take a 15-minute walk.

9. ITACAREZINHO

With an extension of 3.5km, it has hills, coconut trees and reefs. It has great waves for surfing and has tents, restaurants and inns. Itacarezinho is a nesting spot for sea turtles and in the northern part there is a freshwater waterfall that descends from the forest and falls directly on the sand.

The trail that leads to the beach crosses a private property, but traffic is free for pedestrians.

10. SÃO JOSÉ

An area of environmental preservation, it has coconut trees, white sands and strong waves, ideal for surfing. With good tourist infrastructure, it is surrounded by luxury hotels and resorts and has several restaurants. Access to the beach is made by trails that pass inside these establishments.

11. JERIBUCAÇU

Located inside a coconut farm, it is one of the beaches of Itacaré that is deserted almost all year round. Access is on foot via a trail that crosses the farm. It is a good beach for contemplation of nature, not being recommended to swim at the time of the meeting of the waters of the sea with the river.

12. HAWAIZINHO

Considered one of the best beaches for surfing in Itacaré, it is formed by small coves separated by reefs, with strong waves and many coconut trees, surrounded by stone walls and forest. There is a natural viewpoint from which you can enjoy the beautiful view of the beach, which is semi-deserted in low season.

13. SIRIACO

Small and quiet, this is the most hidden beach in Itacaré. It is located in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, with little sand and many rocks, and is accessible by a 15-minute hiking trail. It is ideal to visit it with the accompaniment of a local guide.

14. SERRA GRANDE

Access is via the Park Road that connects Ilhéus to Itacaré, comprising the beaches of Sargi, Pé de Serra, Prainhas da Serra and Praia do Pompilho. Sargi has fine sand, transparent and warm waters, with inns, bars and restaurants. On the beach of Pé de Serra it is possible to appreciate the arrival of the rafts. Pompilho and Prainhas da Serra have restricted access and swimming is not recommended due to the proximity of the mouth of the Tijuípe River.

15. PONTAL

Located north of the Rio das Contas, it is about 50km of coconut groves and deserted beaches, with great waves for surfing. The access is made by a ferry in Itacaré that daily crosses the Rio de Contos to the beach of Pontal.
