Rio Vermelho in Salvador

Rio Vermelho is the bohemian center of Salvador. The neighborhood has attracted attention for its good restaurants, bars and nightlife. That’s right!

As well as preserving history and tradition, Rio Vermelho is emerging as one of the main routes in Bahia’s capital.

What does the Rio Vermelho neighborhood have?

Largo da Mariquita, celebrated acarajés trays, fishermen’s talk and an Iemanjá festival, which draws attention for its religious syncretism accompanied by a lot of faith.

This is where the boats leave in procession to celebrate the Queen of the Sea on February 2nd.

It is also home to three of Bahia’s main hotels: the Pestana, Blue Tree Premium and Mercure.

Want more? There are good restaurants, beautiful people and nightlife.

Restaurants

This is where there are many restaurants and bars and also where tourists and locals enjoy two of the best-known acarajés in Bahia: the Cira and Dinha tray, and Regina’s, in Largo de Santana.

The starting and finishing point should be Largo da Mariquita.

In front of it are the streets of Juracy Magalhães, Borges dos Reis, Conselheiro Pedro Luiz and the surrounding areas, which are home to some of the main nightlife routes in the capital of Bahia.

More precisely, Colombo Square is home to two gastronomic gems: the Fogo de Chão steakhouse and the Colombo Pizzeria do Casarão.

For those who want to appreciate history and good taste, Colombo is the place to go, as it is located in a centuries-old building that once housed the homes of wealthy families, then a police station.

The architecture of the mansion is enchanting, as well as offering a panoramic view of Largo da Mariquita and a good menu.

In the vicinity of the pizzeria there are other gastronomic and nightlife hotspots in the neighborhood, such as Botequim São Jorge, Boteco do França, Salvador

Dalí, as well as Postudo and the current Borracharia, which has a program of rhythms, such as chorinho groups, so it’s around Beco do França where the stronghold of journalists, artists and liberal professionals is concentrated.

Still in the vicinity of Largo da Mariquita, along Rua Guedes Cabral, there are times when passers-by fight with cars over the number of tables in bars and restaurants that line the sidewalks.

This is also the location of the SESI Rio Vermelho Theater, which always has a wide range of cultural programs and good shows. It’s not difficult to come across “Axé Music” stars, winding down an “MPB” solo, giving a “canjinha” or doing what the Bahians call a “rehearsal”.

Further along is Largo de Santana, a cluster of tables in the middle of the church of Nossa Senhora de Santana, where the cold beer and the chat go on until the early hours of the morning, but don’t bet on live music. Bahians live very well with the law that prohibits loud music after 10pm.

The main “calçadão” style bars close around midnight and only the more intimate ones, with more enclosed structures or dance bars, stay open until dawn.

If you want to stretch out without worrying about the time, the tip is to return to Largo da Mariquita and complete the evening at Bartô, a boteco style bar frequented by beautiful people and good snacks.

The restaurant’s owner, Fernanda Pedute, always pleases the customer a little more by passing from table to table.

Going in the opposite direction to Largo da Mariquita, along Odilon Santos Street, you come to Fonte do Boi Street, where there are also several bars, drawing a young and beautiful picture of Rio Vermelho.

There are bars and restaurants of all types, tastes and budgets, one of them playing dancing music, another forró and Bahian mísica and later MPB. The Ibis, Mercure and Pestana hotels can be reached from this street.

If you’d prefer to end the evening in a very popular style, head back to Largo da Mariquita and mingle with the fishermen, “mauricinhos” and “patricinhas” who have just arrived from the “shirt party” and the workers in the area at the so-called Mercado do Peixe.

The axés of the time echo from the loudspeakers of the popular bars, while the “arrocha” singer takes a break.

The choreography from last year’s carnival is on the tip of the toes of the young people combining the steps between the tables. When “arrocha” comes on, the crowd is ready to get into the groove.

The beer is always cold and everything from traditional Bahian moquecas to fried egg with couscous is served.

The mix of rhythms goes wild until the early hours. From down there, you can see Morro do Conselho high above and the neon signs of the international flagship hotels.

The Mercado do Peixe is where the locals mingle with the tourists, writing a page on Salvador’s nightlife as if it were the writings of Aluísio de Azevedo, in “O Cortiço”, or Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, in “Raizes do Brasil”.

After the cabins at Ivete’s party, the Madre or Pereira nightclubs in Barra, and the nightclubs in the city center, Mercado do Peixe is the only nightclub in Bahia.
