Maragogi, Japaratinga, Porto das Pedras and São Miguel dos Milagres belong to Costa dos Corais in the north coast of Alagoas and has vast coconut groves, beautiful beaches of fine sand, a sea of warm waters inhabited by extensive coral reefs and, of course, sun… lots of sun.

The municipalities of the region reveal true treasures formed by natural pools, rivers, old mills, rich cuisine, folkloric and artistic manifestations, as well as a lot of hospitality.

The northeastern coast has several beautiful cities and in Alagoas there are different beach towns that are a delight to rest.

Maragogi and its surroundings are part of the so-called Costa dos Corais, an environmental protection area that extends for about 120 km along the coast and is home to beautiful beaches, with warm waters, coconut trees as far as the eye can see and many natural pools.

Some destinations in the region are better known, others are still little explored and all have in common a stunning beauty.

If your destination is Maragogi, you can travel through Maceió Airport – Zumbi dos Palmares (MCZ) or through Recife Airport – Guararapes/Gilberto Freyre (REC), since the city of Maragogi is halfway between the two capitals.

Maragogi is a city in the state of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil; the city is about 124 km from Maceió and about 130 km from Recife

From the capitals Recife or Maceió you can go by land with a rental car or a transfer to the city. Due to the greater offer of flights, it may be more convenient to arrive in the region through Recife Airport. That’s what we did on our last trip. We picked up the rental car at the airport and drove to Maragogi.

The main activities in the city are focused on the sea, which has beautiful colors in the region!

You can enjoy the beaches, take a trip to its natural pools or a buggy ride. It is important to emphasize that Maragogi is a small town, it does not have many tourist spots or obligations, the best thing there is to really rest.

Main beaches and neighboring towns of Maragogi

The greenish color, like the Caribbean, is usually a strong mark of the place, but the beaches are very different between low and high tide.

At low tide the beaches gain a long stretch of sand, since the sea is “pulled” into the ocean and it is possible to walk several meters in an area that during the high tide period is occupied by water.

During this period the sea is also shallower and this is when we can notice the sandbanks and natural pools on some beaches.

Maragogi Beach

It is the main beach of the village, where the main restaurants of the city are located.

It is not usually frequented by tourists and does not demonstrate all the beauty that the region offers, but from it depart the tours to the natural pools.

This beach is in the center of town, has commerce around, craft market and many nearby inns. You can use it as a reference point for a good location.

Praia de Xaréu

Xaréu is a beach about 8km from the center of Maragogi.

It is close to a small village with summer houses and does not have much commerce on the sand or much movement of bathers during the week, making it ideal for those traveling in search of tranquility;

This beach of crystal clear and warm waters differs from other beaches of Maragogi by forming a kind of lagoon at low tide. At the time when the sea is empty, it is possible to walk several meters “inside the sea”, with a super low water level.

It is due to this low water level that many people go to the place to cool off and buggys make tours with a stop there.

As the beach is protected by a coral reef, it is quiet and offers no danger, its waves are weak.

When the “lagoon” is formed, the place is ideal to take children or to put your beach chair in the sea and be able to cool your feet. If you want to stay in the “lagoon”, avoid taking belongings that can not be wet.

Barra Grande Beach

Barra Grande is one of the coolest beaches in Maragogi. Its waters are clear, calm, ideal for families with children or for those who prefer to enjoy a pool-style sea.

The beautiful color that attracts tourists from different cities remains in this region and gets even better if you reach the galleys of Barra Grande.

A trip to the place is usually in the plans of tourists visiting the city, especially when the tide is dry.

This beach is great at low tide, because at this time it becomes possible to enjoy a sandbank that is next to the beach.

Locals also say that this sandbank can give access to the natural pools of Barra Grande, which is usually accessed by boat.

The pools are about 1km into the sea and the sandbank allows even people who do not know how to swim to reach the pools without much effort – all this, of course, at low tide (0.0).

If you want to visit the pools of Barra Grande through the sandbar, be sure to check the tide table and make the crossing on the day and time of the lowest tide – go a little before the time of the low tide apex and return some time later so as not to catch the tide filling.

Moses’ Path

The name refers to the biblical passage of Moses when opening the Red Sea and in Maragogi it is a sandbank located on Barra Grande Beach.

The site is only apparent at low tide and allows visitors to walk many meters into the sea, always walking over the sandbar. It is necessary to check the tide table to be able to visit Caminho de Moisés at the right time!

The place is beautiful and really very different… around it the water is very shallow, ideal for those with children.
