A few meters from the Marco Zero of Recife, the Cais do Sertão is installed
The Cais do Sertão museum has 7,500 m2 of built area just a few meters from Recife’s Marco Zero, Cais do Sertão is installed.
The proposal of Cais do Sertão is to be much more than a museum to house the collection and revere the work of the most important Pernambuco artist of all time.
Using innovative exhibition and technological resources, the space will provide visitors with an immersive experience in the universe of the northeastern hinterland, origin and source of inspiration of Luiz Gonzaga, in all its richness, diversity and complexity.
“The hinterland will become the sea and the sea will become the hinterland”.
One of the most modern cultural facilities in the country, Cais do Sertão takes up the ancient prophecy of Antônio Conselheiro.
In a space of 7,500 square meters, on the site of the old Warehouse 10 of the Port of Recife, art, culture and technology come together in an innovative project.

Using state-of-the-art exhibition and technological resources, the museum invites visitors to experience immersion in the universe of the northeastern hinterland and to be surprised by its richness, diversity and complexity.
The work of Luiz Gonzaga, the artist who best sang and translated with genius the life of the northeastern man to the world, is the guiding thread of this dive into the reality of the sertaneja.
To walk through the different spaces of the museum is to discover and experience the multiple dimensions of this universe: Living, Working, Singing, Occupying, Believing, Migrating and Creating in the Sertão.
Cais do Sertão Museum is divided into two modules
Module 1: In this place, of 2 thousand m2, the permanent exhibition is being installed, which proposes an immersion in the culture of the Sertão and in the work of Luiz Gonzaga, through objects, works of art specially created to compose the collection and technological interventions.
Module 2: Corresponds to the Cultural Center with auditorium, rooms for workshops, restaurant, café and spaces for ambiance and coexistence. The total area is 5.5 thousand m2. The physical works are in the execution phase, with an expected inauguration at the end of 2014.
Sea and hinterland, new and old, technology and tradition anchored in a surprising structure in the historic port, gateway to the world for the Recife of the XXI century.
Realization
Cais do Sertão is a project of the Government of Pernambuco, through the Secretariat of Economic Development. It is budgeted at R$ 97 million, resources from the Ministry of Culture and the State Treasury.
These resources include civil construction works, facilities, equipment, furniture, content, elaboration of the management model and educational project. For the execution of the project, agreements were signed with the Port of Recife, Porto Digital (through Porto Mídia) and Gilberto Freyre Foundation.
Cais do Sertão is part of the Porto Novo project, with which the Port of Recife is returning to the city spaces previously dedicated to port operations.
It is a major project of requalification and reurbanization of noble spaces that will dialogue and enrich the leisure, culture and tourism options of the Recife neighborhood.
In addition to the museum, this project includes the Artesanato of Pernambuco, the Maritime Passenger Terminal and the redevelopment of the entire surroundings of these facilities.
