Ilha de Maré in the Baia de Todos os Santos is covered by banana plantations and surrounded by beaches and mangroves, it has two main villages: Santana and Praia Grande.

They are home to lace-makers and men who fish with nets (in colorful canoes) or make handicrafts with bamboo.

One of the most visited by schooners that make trips in the Baía de Todos os Santos, it has 12 villages spread over almost 14 km2, and is part of the municipality of Salvador, although it is much closer to the municipalities of Candeias and Madre de Deus.

Ilha de Maré is famous for its bobbin lace handicrafts and its banana jam in straw.

It is still a primitive place with beautiful beaches and villages of little houses by the sea.

The vegetation is dense, with a vast expanse of Atlantic Forest, mango trees, coconut palms and the cane brava, which serves as raw material for basketry handicrafts.

The three largest villages – Santana, Itamoabo and Praia Grande – are also the best beaches. All of them, however, have rocks and mangroves.

Among the cultural attractions are the churches of Senhora Santana, from the 19th century, and the church Nossa Senhora das Neves, built by Father Bartolomeu Pires in the 16th century.

Tours on the island can be made by an unusual means of transportation, the jegue, the most common form of locomotion on the island, where there are no motor vehicles.

The “jeguetour” is a special attraction for those seeking a closer contact with nature and a centuries-old culture.

In fact, it seems that Ilha de Maré is a little piece of the planet that has been forgotten by time. Despite its proximity to Salvador – 30 minutes by boat – the people of this island cultivate ancient habits and live basically from fishing and handicrafts.

Praia de Itamoabo – “native” boys await visitors with refreshing coconut water and jegs to take tourists on the tour.

Vila de Santana – there are the famous bobbin lace makers, who give a show of skill with their hands when weaving fine towels that are very successful.
