What to visit on a trip to the coast of the Northeast ?

The itinerary consists of three major attractions – Jericoacoara, Delta do Parnaíba and Lençóis Maranhenses.
In addition, tourists have the opportunity to customise packages to visit other beaches and practice adventure activities throughout the trip.
There are options that include Barra Grande, Fortaleza and Santo Amaro among the destinations visited, in addition to optional activities such as horseback riding and kitesurfing.
The trip usually starts in Jericoacoara, which enchants with its beautiful landscape, beaches with crystal clear water and the sunset on the dunes (which is something spectacular)!
After that, the route heads towards the Parnaíba Delta. Parnaíba Delta.
The only delta in the Americas surprises by the nature and diversity of landscapes in the region. It is formed by more than 80 islands, lies between the states of Piauí and Maranhão and presents diverse landscapes, with rivers, lagoons, mangroves, dunes and beautiful beaches. The adventure ends in Maranhão, where you can enjoy the famous Lençóis Maranhenses. In addition to strolling through the dunes, depending on the length of the trip and your interests, it is possible to take a boat trip on the Preguiça River and visit the lagoons of Barreirinhas, among other activities.
To make the most of each state visited, the ideal is to separate at least ten days, but this may vary according to the chosen package.
The itinerary integrates ecotourism, adventure and many natural beauties, which can be enjoyed in hiking, horseback riding, panoramic flights, among other options.
Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco
If you don’t have many days available to travel, but want to go to more than one capital, opt for an itinerary that includes Natal, João Pessoa and Recife. The journey between the three cities can be done by car and the total distance is approximately 4h30.
Depending on your place of origin, the best option is to fly to Natal and, from there, rent a car or transfer to the other cities. In ten days, you can get to know the best of each region, from the beaches to the local culture.
Genipabu no Rio Grande do Norte
During your stay in Natal, it is worth including in the itinerary the buggy ride through the dunes of Genipabu, the visit to the Tourism Centre, which has craft shops and restaurants, and Pipa – which is about 80 km from Natal, and you can take day trips or stay there.
Praia da Pipa - RN
From Natal, the journey along the coast of the Northeast can continue to João Pessoa, about 190 kilometres away. In the capital of Paraíba, it will be time to enjoy Praia do Seixas and Praia do Amor, visit the Cabo Branco Lighthouse, see the sunrise or sunset at Ponta do Seixas (the easternmost point of the Americas), among other activities.
In this itinerary, the last destination will be Recife, where the famous Boa Viagem Beach is located. Depending on your programme, you can also visit Olinda and extend the tour to other beaches in the region. The recommendation is to reserve about three days to explore the main attractions of each capital.
To make the trip even more unforgettable, try to include the village of São Miguel do Gostoso (RN), the natural pools of Pitimbu (PB) and the Praia dos Carneiros (PE) to your tour.
Bahia, Sergipe and Alagoas
The Bahia is one of the most sought-after destinations on a trip along the coast of the Northeast, as it has a lot to offer its visitors.
In ten days, you can travel the route of the Discovery Coast, in the south of the state, and visit numerous destinations there, such as Belmonte, Santo André, Santa Cruz Cabrália (including Coroa Vermelha beach), Porto Seguro, Arraial d’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva.
One more alternative, also surrounded by natural beauty, is to start the journey by Salvador, heading to Sergipe and Alagoas. To explore all the beaches on this route, you will need at least 15 days.
Therefore, if the period of your trip is shorter, the tip is to choose some specific destinations and set up a shorter programme.
The most suitable places to visit are:
- The Ecological Route, in Alagoas (São Miguel dos Milagres, Barra de Camaragibe and Porto das Pedras), which can be done in three or four days;
- Aracaju;.
- The beautiful beaches of the Bahian coast, such as the Praia do Forte and the Costa do Sauípe
The distances between each of the capitals are approximately 4h by car.
When and how to go to the north-east?
When we think of a trip to the coast of the Brazilian Northeast, the heat and the holiday atmosphere soon come to mind, don’t they?
But this period is considered high season and prices tend to rise a lot, as well as the number of tourists.
Therefore, if you are looking for tranquillity and economy, the best option is to plan for the low season. After all, no one wants to waste their precious time queuing at restaurants or fighting for space on the beach, right?
The months from March to June and September to November are ideal to enjoy everything the Northeast has to offer calmly, away from any confusion or turmoil. In addition, the difference in prices in low season is considerable.
According to the time chosen for the trip, it is possible to find discounts on accommodation, tours, restaurants and even airline tickets. So, set the ideal date and keep an eye out for promotions!
If you are travelling from more distant regions of Brazil, the best option is to fly back and forth, which will save you effort and precious time. When you arrive at the first destination, the tip is to rent a car or rely on a transfer service to get around the cities more easily.
If you come from regions close to the Northeast, travelling by car or bus can also be a good alternative. However, do not forget to analyse the possibilities of parking, as well as the location of the bus terminals.
